Somewhere on the Path, I See You is a combination of two different types of women: one with extreme self-regulation and distorted notions of beauty, who suffer from eating disorders. The other women are aspiring actresses and models living in Hollywood, California, who are interested in the process of being represented because they carry dreams of fame. By combining the two bodies of work, larger themes surface regarding the dichotomy between the necessity of being seen and the effects of constantly seeing.

The first group of women confronted their own mirror image: photographed with a single-lens reflex camera, they allowed me to record it on film. The second lives in the deep rift between self-perception and staged appearance. Bringing them together places the viewer in the position of aesthetic judge. Facing women who have been judged continuously, and by themselves, we feel our own impulse to judge.

My subjects stand in the middle of the frame, looking straight at the camera.

We find fresh-faced candor and welcoming tenderness. We find deceit, eyes that float on the surface as skin does. We find tired eyes that carry all of their history, and the hints of a smile below them. A single eye pokes out as the plea of an ageless soul in an aging body, holding the confidence of tremendous beauty as the body slowly fades.
