Biography

Ji Yeo is a New York and Seoul based artist who believes beauty is integral to human nature and people find beauty in the most difficult circumstances, during emotional chaos and disorder, within societal taboos and the breaking of such taboos and even in the face of death. Her recent works focus on ideas of “beauty” in contemporary culture, specifically in how women in our culture come to define and enforce the ideal of beauty on themselves. She discusses these cultural phenomena through photographic, performance, and time-based projects.

Her work is held in the collections of the Smithsonian and the RISD Museum, and has been shown at the International Center of Photography in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in London, ClampArt in New York, Baxter St at CCNY in New York, the Houston Center for Photography, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Space 22 in Seoul, among others. Her work has been featured worldwide, including The Guardian, BBC, The Washington Post, NPR, National Geographic, LA Times, Wired, Vice, Dazed, Marie Claire Brazil, and Esquire Russia. She was called the “next generation of Korean photographers” by Dazed and Confused and a “game-changing photographer” by Sleek Magazine.

She holds an MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (President’s Scholarship), a BFA in Visual Communication Design from Seoul National University, and a certificate in General Studies from the International Center of Photography, New York.
