Biography

Ji Yeo is a New York and Seoul based artist who believes beauty is integral to human nature: people find it even in the most difficult circumstances, even in the face of death. Her work focuses on the idea of beauty in contemporary culture, and on how women come to define, enforce, and carry its ideal. She works through photography, performance, and video.

I love slow, old things. I shoot film, medium format most of all, where every click is precious and cannot be taken back. And I love the fastest new tools too, always keeping tabs on new technology, these days AI image creation. When two extremes meet, they create a unique perspective. I have lived at that meeting point my whole life.

Her work is held in the collections of the Smithsonian and the RISD Museum. British Vogue named her one of “9 Visionary East Asian Photographers You Should Be Following Now,” Dazed called her part of “the next generation of Korean photographers,” and Sleek Magazine called her a “game-changing photographer.” She has exhibited at the International Center of Photography in New York, the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, ClampArt, Baxter St at CCNY, the Houston Center for Photography, the Vestfossen Museum in Norway, and Space 22 in Seoul, among others. Her work has been featured in The Guardian, BBC, The Washington Post, NPR, National Geographic, LA Times, Wired, Vice, Marie Claire Brazil, and Esquire Russia.

She holds an MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design (President’s Scholarship), a BFA in Visual Communication Design from Seoul National University, and a certificate in General Studies from the International Center of Photography, New York.
